THE TRUTH ABOUT HYPNOSIS
THERE ARE MANY MYTHS ABOUT HYPNOSIS
Most of the myths come from stage shows, quick-fix marketing, or the idea that change should happen instantly.
Real therapeutic hypnosis is very different. And far more empowering.
MYTH 1
MYTH: HYPNOSIS TAKES AWAY YOUR CONTROL. REALITY: YOU ARE ALWAYS IN CONTROL.
Hypnosis does not override your will. You cannot be made to do anything that conflicts with your values or beliefs.
In a therapeutic hypnosis session, you remain aware, present, and in full choice throughout. The hypnotic state is simply a deeply relaxed, focused state of attention one you likely experience naturally every day, such as when you’re absorbed in a book or daydreaming.
Your conscious mind never switches off. Your safety is always held.
MYTH 2
MYTH: HYPNOSIS MAKES YOU CHANGE. REALITY: HYPNOSIS WORKS WITH YOU, NOT ON YOU.
It works with the parts of you that developed patterns for a reason.
Smoking, drinking, nail biting, anxious responding - these are not random behaviours. They are protective strategies your nervous system learned at some point in your life.
In counselling-led hypnosis, we understand the pattern before we attempt to change it. We work with protective parts not against them.
Change happens through safety - not force.
MYTH 3
MYTH: ONE SESSION SHOULD FIX EVERYTHING. REALITY: DEEP PATTERNS OFTEN FORMED OVER YEARS.
Sometimes powerful shifts happen quickly. Often, reinforcement and integration are needed. This is not failure. This is how neural pathways strengthen.
Sustainable change is built through structured support and repetition not a single “magic” moment. This is why my work is structured as a journey rather than isolated sessions.
Real change is worth doing properly.
MYTH 4
MYTH: IF A HABIT RETURNS, THE HYPNOSIS DIDN’T WORK. REALITY: RETURNING PATTERNS CARRY IMPORTANT INFORMATION.
When a behaviour resurfaces, it tells us a protective part still believes it serves a purpose. We don’t see this as failure. We go back. We listen. We update the pattern again.
Rewiring is a process - not a performance.
This is exactly why ongoing integration support is woven into the way I work, because lasting change deserves to be held all the way through.
MYTH 5
MYTH: HYPNOSIS IS ONLY FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE. REALITY: MOST PEOPLE CAN BENEFIT FROM THERAPEUTIC HYPNOSIS.
You don’t need to be “highly hypnotisable” or have any prior experience. You simply need a willingness to slow down and turn your attention inward. Hypnosis is a natural state. We move in and out of it every day. Therapeutic hypnosis simply uses that state with intention and care.
If you can daydream, you can experience hypnosis.
MYTH 6
MYTH: HYPNOSIS IS THE SAME AS BEING ASLEEP OR UNCONSCIOUS. REALITY: HYPNOSIS IS A STATE OF FOCUSED AWARENESS.
You are not asleep. You are not unconscious. You are in a deeply relaxed, inwardly focused state often described as feeling calm, heavy, and quietly alert at the same time. Most people remember the session clearly afterwards. Many describe it as one of the most peaceful experiences they’ve had.
It is rest with a purpose.
HOW I WORK DIFFERENTLY
Counselling-led. Heart-centred. Grounded in safety.
I practice counselling-led, heart-centred focused hypnosis. This means the therapeutic relationship and emotional understanding always come first.
In our work together:
• We explore the emotional roots of patterns not just the surface behaviour
• We work with protective parts not against them
• We build nervous system safety before any subconscious work begins
• We integrate change between sessions with personalised recordings
• We focus on identity-level shifts not surface suppression
